India’s consumer price index (CPI) inflation accelerated to 4.82% year-on-year in August 2026, up from 4.45% in July, according to provisional data from the National Statistical Office (NSO). Within this, clothing and footwear prices rose 3.56% year-on-year, slightly faster than the 3.38% recorded in July. This category remained below the headline rate, with clothing prices increasing 3.93% and footwear prices just 1.12%.

A striking regional divide emerged: rural clothing and footwear inflation stood at 4.17%, while urban areas saw a lower 2.57%. In fact, urban footwear prices actually fell by 0.65% year-on-year. Meanwhile, outside the clothing and footwear basket, silver jewellery prices skyrocketed by 107.11%, and gold, diamond, and platinum jewellery rose 35.53%—a reminder of how precious metals can distort overall price signals.
