Design Academy Eindhoven Graduation Show 2026: Custodianship and Systemic Change
Design Academy Eindhoven's Graduation Show returns for Dutch Design Week 2026 with over 200 projects exploring historical legacies, material residue, and systemic extraction.
Design Academy Eindhoven Graduation Show 2026: A Platform for Critical Design
From 17 to 25 October 2026, Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) will open its doors for its annual Graduation Show during Dutch Design Week. Held at Professor Doctor Dorgelolaan 2 in Eindhoven, the exhibition will span four floors and feature more than 200 Bachelor’s and Master’s projects. This year’s edition introduces thematic pathways across the basement and gallery spaces, alongside dedicated rooms for singular, world-building works. The return of the Arena provides a central forum for programmed discussions, workshops, and student-led debate, positioning the showcase as both a gallery of emerging talent and an active site for industry-relevant discourse.
Themes of Custodianship and Systemic Accountability
The 2026 graduate cohort focuses heavily on unresolved historical legacies, material residue, and systemic extraction. Using sound, film, performance, and interactive systems, students probe institutional responsibility and ongoing stewardship. Their work reflects a growing emphasis in design pedagogy on long-term commitment, iterative research, and critical engagement with material and social systems. By framing graduate work through themes of custodianship and systemic accountability, the academy reinforces the evolving role of design education in preparing practitioners to navigate complex contemporary industries.
Material Residue and Historical Legacies
Many projects examine the physical and cultural traces left by past processes. Material residue becomes both subject and medium, as students experiment with reclaimed resources and question the lifecycle of designed objects. These investigations often extend into performance and interactive pieces that invite visitors to consider their own role in systems of extraction and waste.
Systemic Extraction and Institutional Responsibility
Another strand of work addresses the structures that underpin production and consumption. Through film, sound, and participatory installations, graduates interrogate how institutions—including design schools themselves—perpetuate or challenge extractive practices. The Arena will host discussions and workshops that deepen these conversations, turning the exhibition into a space for active reflection rather than passive viewing.
Awards and Recognition
In tandem with the exhibition, DAE has announced the nominees for its Gijs Bakker, René Smeets, and Melkweg Awards. These accolades recognise exceptional Master’s and Bachelor’s projects, evaluated by an external industry jury. Winners will be revealed during the opening ceremony. Each winner receives €2,000 and a custom trophy created by alumna Clara Schweers in collaboration with MAKE Eindhoven. The awards highlight the academy’s commitment to celebrating risk-taking and rigour across both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Guided Tours and Alumni Support
To connect graduates directly with design professionals and institutional partners, the academy is running student-led guided tours throughout the show. A portion of the proceeds from these tours will be directed toward funding DAE Alumni Association initiatives, creating a cycle of support that extends beyond graduation. This initiative not only offers visitors deeper insight into the projects but also strengthens the network between emerging designers and established practitioners.
