Bellingham Fronts Calvin Klein Icon Cotton Stretch

Jude Bellingham makes his Calvin Klein debut in the Icon Cotton Stretch campaign, shot in Madrid and built around the idea of 'the icon underneath'.

A footballer takes the spotlight

Celebrity casting has long been one of Calvin Klein’s most effective marketing tools, and the brand’s latest underwear campaign keeps that playbook firmly in place — this time with a footballer at the centre. Jude Bellingham fronts the Icon Cotton Stretch campaign, marking his first appearance for the label.

The campaign launches globally on Monday and was photographed and directed by Oliver Hadlee Pearch in Madrid in August. The imagery is deliberately understated, showing the athlete in pared-back settings, and includes a small reference to his trademark on-pitch celebration. Rather than leaning on elaborate sets, the focus stays on the clothes and the person wearing them.

The idea behind the campaign

The concept is summed up as “the icon underneath” — a way of linking Bellingham’s public confidence with something more private: the feeling of being at ease in your own skin. It is a simple message, and one that fits the product’s emphasis on everyday comfort.

“I really enjoyed working on this campaign,” Bellingham said. “I liked the idea of ’the icon underneath’ — that confidence starts with feeling comfortable in yourself. Calvin Klein is such an iconic brand, so it was great to bring that idea to life in my own way.”

That framing also helps position the range as something worn for yourself rather than purely for show, which is the natural territory of a cotton stretch collection.

A proven approach to attention

Calvin Klein has turned celebrity underwear campaigns into major talking points before, and the results are easy to see. In spring 2024, Jeremy Allen White fronted an underwear campaign photographed by Mert Alas on a New York rooftop. The images and accompanying film spread rapidly across social media, helped by a prominent SoHo billboard. According to Launchmetrics figures, the campaign generated 12.7 million dollars in Media Impact Value within its first 48 hours.

The following example came from a different corner of entertainment. Jung Kook, a member of BTS, fronted a Calvin Klein Jeans campaign in autumn 2023 that generated 13.4 million dollars in MIV in 48 hours, again according to Launchmetrics.

It is worth being precise about what those numbers mean. Launchmetrics’ MIV metric is proprietary and assigns a monetary value to media exposure across channels, weighing factors such as reach, engagement, source authority and content quality. It is a way of comparing campaign visibility, not a measure of revenue generated.

Why the sporting angle matters

Bellingham’s campaign follows the same broad strategy, but the context is different. Football has an enormous, global and highly engaged audience, and an underwear launch fronted by one of the sport’s most recognisable young players reaches viewers well beyond traditional fashion coverage. The pared-back creative arguably suits that audience too: it is less about staging a fantasy and more about presenting a person with a straightforward message about self-assurance.

What is actually being sold

The product focus is Icon Cotton Stretch, a range built around comfort, support and a flexible cotton-stretch blend. Bellingham introduces the Icon Cotton Stretch Shine Trunk, which updates the Infinity Bond logo waistband with a shine finish. He also wears several other core styles from the line: the Boxer Brief, the Low Rise Trunk, the Hip Brief and the Slim Boxer.

For anyone browsing the range, the differences between those cuts come down to fit and coverage rather than dramatic design changes. The trunk sits shorter on the leg than a boxer brief, the hip brief offers minimal coverage, and the slim boxer provides a closer-cut alternative. The shared cotton-stretch fabric is what ties them together, giving the collection its stretch and recovery.

The celebrity campaign as a formula

Looking at these campaigns side by side, a pattern emerges. A well-known face, a restrained photographic style, a short film for social platforms and out-of-home placements in high-traffic locations all combine to generate conversation. The formula is repeatable, but it depends on choosing someone whose existing public image can be linked convincingly to the brand’s message.

With Bellingham, that link is confidence and composure. The campaign’s tagline does the work of connecting a stadium-scale persona to a quieter, personal idea about comfort. Whether or not the imagery travels as widely as previous efforts, the strategy is clearly one the brand trusts — and the footballer’s global profile gives it plenty of reach to work with.

The campaign lands globally from Monday, with the Icon Cotton Stretch collection available alongside it.
